Has anyone heard of this group?
They say they will support OS/2 (subsystem)
in their os (based on ReactOS).

Hi.
I am writing to you in the name of all BetaComp Team members, because
we're thinking, that you are the best from the best. We make new
operating system firstly based on ReactOS <http://www.reactos.com
<http://www.reactos.com/>> (the part of you work on ReactOS or did it in
the past). Why base on ReactOS? The answer is very simple. HostiliX
(this is a name of our OS) is compatible with Windows(R) and ReactOS is
compatible with Microsoft(C) product too, so we based HostiliX on
ReactOS, because we don't want to waste our time to do something what is
already done. Now suggest next question: Why are we doing Windows(R)
clone? We are not making a Windows clone! Just most hardware
manufacturers do drivers only for Windows(R), so we want to HostiliX be
able to use it. We don't have time to do drivers! The same situation is
with Windows applications. Most users need Windows(R) software. We want
to permit them to use free operating system and them's favourite
software. But running Windows software isn't our priority!
We want to make new, fast, stable and secure operating system. It will
have its' own SubSystem using CygWin, or CygWin clone, so it will run
modified Linux applications. POSIX SubSystem must be modified of course.
There won't be root directory (/). All ported from Linux to HostiliX
software will use drive letters like A:, C:, (...). The will be also
OS/2(R) and DOS(R) SubSystems.
FAQ:
Q: How want we to do drive letters in ported from Linux software?
A: We want to modify libraries like GTK and QT (dialog windows) and add
into it drive litters support. PosiX Layer will modify all slashes to
backslash and if any program want to access / directory PosiX Layer will
translate it to for example C:\HostiliX\System32\Posix where will be
usr, bin, sbin and folders. Directory structure of Posix dir will be
compatible with Unix directory structure. All drive letters will have
shortcuts (will be mounted) somewhere in this directory. Using modified
open/save/etc dialog windows user will feel that he uses any Windows
application.
Q: What's our pririty?
A: Make HostiliX stable fast and secure with all features like logging
in/out, switching user, shutting down system (power off, reboot and
hibernate).
Q: Will be hibernate just a hibernate?
A: No! When system call hibernate process it will close all network
connections and then unload drivers to all network hardware. Then will
hibernate computer. After user power on computer again HostiliX will
boot up from hibernation and then loads again unloaded before
hibernation process drivers. What it adds? Let's imagine that you have
Sagem Fast 800 ADSL Modem Connected to USB. When you power off your
computer, driver will load, but modem will be unsynchronised with line.
HostiliX will load this driver again, synchronise modem and connect to
Internet again.
Q: Why don't we help ReactOS Team?
A: There's a few reasons. First: We don't want to do Windows clone.
HostiliX will be only able to load Windows(R) drivers and run Windows(R)
software, when we will do more and repair existing I/O Functions.
Second: Windows software compatibility isn't our priority! Third: We
don't like ReactOS Team policy. They're doing anything like this in
Windows(R). They even cloned Explorer. We only want to compatible with
Windows(R) startup, shutdown (without hibernate), login processes. But
it won't looks like Windows. HostiliX will have its' own GUI (it's GDI +
XOrg with theming support).
If you have any other questions to us, if something isn't clear, please
write to me. I'll reply and answer to all your questions!
Why I write to you? Because we (BetaComp Team) think, that you're the
best from the best. We need more people to write really good OS. If you
have free time and want to make really great Operating System for home
and business please help us! Please reply.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Rafal Kupiec
BetaComp Team
